Blog 10 - Mise-en-scene

Setting/Location

For Setting/Location we wanted to have a mixture of urban locations to compliant our music video. We have decided that Brighton would be a good location for this because there is the famous graffiti walls around the back street of the North Lanes which we would use as a backdrop to our video. Other street like Station Street and Cheapside would be great for tracking shots where our actors could walk down the street performing with the graffiti in the back ground, like in Hip-Hop and Rap music video we researched, (for example; third picture)

Another location we thought of was Lewes skate park because the people that hangout there would be good as background because of the way they dress and attitudes. Also we have lots of friends that can drive so we could have a few shots where the actors are in the car whether it would be stationary or moving depends on the actual ability to shoot and if it is possible to do so.

Props

In our music video we will be focusing more on costume then props because you wanted to keep to the terdition of other rap videos, where the rapper is the main focus so the costumes are very detailed to that perticula style so we aren't using that many props. The few props we are using are inspired but other artists rap videos which will create a glamourus and wealth, high life style that the artists in the rap music give across. We are using cigarettes or cigars as they are seen as a 'cool' and 'bad' which could add to our performers urban credit. I think we should have cigars more then cigarettes as cigarettes even though now a days are thought of a being a 'cool'/'bad' thing also are seen to be something that everyone does. Cigars on the other hand are seen as something that the upper class would smoke and in urban culture it is seen as the wealthy and also cigars are seen in music video such as 'Snoop Dogs' videos as something that wealthy pimps would smoke. To keep with the theme of wealth you thought that money would be a good idea as a prop. The money will be in the form of dollor bills in big bunches that will problity been thrown at the camera. The last prop we thought of was a car which was metioned in the 'setting' above. This is what the peroformer can sit in and drive around in. This will what up the status of our performer in the urban culture.

Colour

To give off a urban affect to our music video we decided that from the costumes to the setting the colours would be bright and vibrant. These loud and contasting colours will stand and give of the urban culture that we want to present.

Costume

The costumes we are going to use will be mixture of typical urban clothing that is shown in many rap musics. The typical costumes will be using will be thing like big over sized hoodies, puffy jackets, flat caps, jeans, and big cunky jewlery. Some explains are below.

Make Up
We arent really doing much make up for our video because the female and being males in the video and because we want the lifestyle and setting of the video to stand out more then the make up so we will have to use minimalistic make up so that the performers dont look rough on camera so only brings out figures in there face but with them still looking natural.

Blog 9 - Pitch

This is a link was my group and I's powerpoint and pitch to the group Wu Tang Clan about our ideas for our music video going over the target audience, genre and hey points .

Blog 8 - Initals Ideals

As a group our ideas are to challenge sterotypes and conservsy of rap videos. We thought we should do this by using the oppsite gender and race to a normal rap vdieo. The merjority of rap videos are dominanted by males with the women are used as sexual objects as the men have power over them and dominate them. We decided that we would switch the gender's around so that the audinece would watching the video and see that woman are more pwoerful and dominanting characters. We found that it would also be funny this the females in the video would be lip sinking to a male voice. What also will add humour is that we are putting the women in as men doing the same movement and expressions as them to kinda of take the mic out of how males act in rap videos.

We feel that Wu-tang Clan suits this type of vdieo as they are very none for using women for the male gaze in their videos. They also add humour into their videos talking about sex, getting high and money. This gives them a big following and fan base.

A good example of this is in their video 'Gravel Pit' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGS7I8_UXhM

In this video they are set in the stone age which bring humour to the video as it is getting all the funny aspects of that age period. The song Gravel Pit is actually about a casnio and in the video they give a interpitation that it was a actual gravel pit with a casnio in it which adds to the humour. The thing you notice the somein this music video is how women are protrayed shaking there boobs and bums for the gaze of a man. This is a big reason

We have an idea to use a fish eye kens effect as it is typical in videos for a rap/hip hop genre. An example of this is the song 'Mo Money Mo Problems' by Notorious B.I.G

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twkh0YiInPM

Another example of this effect is from the Beastie Boy , Intergalactic.

The actors will be dressed in urban clothing that bring out the culture, for example over sized jackets, hoodies, hats and chains which are also tyically worn by Wu Tang. Because it will be females dressing this way it will add humour to our video making the costume add to our overall aim.
These are a few examples of what stuff of the costumes will be. The poses the actors doing are silimar to how they will be in the music video which they will be doing towards the camera and engaging the audience are like the poses they do in Wu Tang Clan's videos.

We think that our ideas are aimed at our target audience and protray the genre really well. We havnt gone to far from the conventional pattern of Wu tang Clan's videos except that we are challenging the gender and racial stereotypes.

Blog 7 - Coping an existing Video

For coping an existing video, as a class, we had to do 'Teenage Dirtybag' by a early 2000 band called 'Wheatus'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jJVRcCdvyY
We were only doing the first part of the music video. Before we started filming we look at the orginal video over and over again storyboarding it. I didnt really realise how much detail you had to put in when you analysed just one shot. In the first 10 seconds there are 5 different shots which in each of these shots we had to included; shot type, shot number and description of action etc... see pictures below.

As a group when we first started filming we had to fill in a shooting script, this included the image of the shot, the shot number, shot type, description of action, camera movement/direction and how many takes it took. I found having all of these things here useful because it kept everything in order and made it easier for everyone involved. I thought we were good because we got everyone involved and everyone in the group was doing something to contribued; which could be acting in the video or using the camera etc.
We were also shown how to use a clapperboard, this was so we could log each take on film. It is a simple written note placed at the front of the camera and filmed. Being a easy way when editing to find the right shoot quickly without going through the whole tape, ie Shot 6, Take 9.

I have contributed to the video by being in the videos alot and there doing a bit of behind the camera work like filming with the camera on the tripot. The camera (which is a Canon XM2) is mounted to the camera to give it stability when filming. This helps zooming, panning and tilting of the camera because it keeps it stable and not shaky. The tripot we used at college have a spirit level on it which enables you to position the camera to an exact horizontal. I also learnt that you cant be nerve infront of the camera or it will just look unbelievable, I also learnt that when using the camera on the trypot I had to keep a legs wide apart so I could keep the camera steady.

There was more to set up just then the tripot. We had to set the white balance of the camera to suit the conditions of which you are filming in wheather it is outside or inside. This is because the camera reacts differently to different light conditions. For example; if you are filming outside the white balance should be set to "Daytime Filming," all of the setting are based on the colour temperture. If you didn't use the "Daytime Filming" setting while you were outside then the footage would have a blue tint to it. I also learn that this counts for inside, where the setting should be artificial light. With the white balance I came to learn about how to ajust the expsure and not to let the camera run on auto. This is using the manual setting which gives you control over how light and dark the fottage is. You change the exposure using a conbination of the shutter speed, aperture and gain.

After adjusting the exposure we had to change the frame size to be like a widescreen. This is called a 16:9 ratio. Normally the camera we used were set to a standard frame side of a ratio of 4:3. To understand any ratio we had to apply a rule of thirds. Now that our frame size was to the right ratio we could do the focal range of our camera. We had to think about the use of depth of field to centre of the audience attention on a particular part of the frame by having it in focus while the brest of the shot was blurred. This is called a "Shallow or Narrow Depth of Field". We did this in the Hallway shot, in this shot we also shifted the focus from one part of the frame to the another, this is called "Pull Focus"

Apart from the techquical stuff I found that being infront of the camera quite hard because of the fact that everyone is the room is looking at you and you have to make what your doing believeable which on your own, I thought, was a bit of a cringe.I had to pay attention to what the director was telling me and to try and stay in the position I had been given while miming infront of the camera. I didnt really get to direct the group that much which I thought was ashame because I didnt get to influence a pericurlly shot but I did try and put in as much in put as I could of where thing should go and the best way to do thing like in the shot where I have to sing to the camera I thought it would be a good idea if the music was cut to the point we wanted then played over again so we could get as many shots as possiable.
I have found that being perspefic and paying attention to detail about things in the shot very useful because when you are filming at every aspect because it helps you understand what is going on as a team more, making the team effective.
I didnt get to be the director but in our exercise the director worked with the camera opertor to set each shot. They the positioned the actors and extras in position. After checking the composition of the shot they call to the actors to be ready, the the camera operator who set up the camera recording. The clapperboard was then placed in the front of the camera and show shot was called. The director then called action to start the shot and cut to close it.

We also leant how to edit our film very basically using the Apple programme - Final Cut Pro.
First we had to attach the firewire cable from the camera we used to a slot in the computer and then open Final Cut Pro.
Then we had to 'capture' our footage. We did this by loading our footage onto the computer and saving it.
We had to set the 'capture' to the pixel aspect ratio of (PAL-24FPS)
Using Final Cut Pro allows us to edit in a non linear way, which is very helpful if we wanted to edit a certain part of the film first for example the middle. This creates a greater flexibility than editing film.
We had to select a piece of footage using the 'selector tool' and then cut it between each take using the 'razor tool'.
While editing we have had to follow the editing process- step one called an 'assembly edit' where you have to cut out all the footage we don't want to use and assemble to footage we do want to use on the timeline and putting it in order, step two is called 'rough draft/edit' where we have to aim to create a seamless flow to the sequence and finally step three 'Final edit' where we finally tweak the cuts made in the sequence and sync the music and effects to the sequence which can take some time.

Here is the time-lapse filming I took part in..

Blog 6 - Video Analysis

C.R.E.A.M - Wu Tang Clan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjZRAvsZf1g

The genre of Wu Tang Clan video of C.R.E.A.M is East coast Hip-Hop and Rap. East Coast Hip Hop and Rap is occasionally referred to as New York rap due to its organs and development at block parties thrown in NYC during the 1970s. In contrast to the simplistic rhyme pattern and scheme utilized in old school Hip-Hop, East Coast Hip-Hop/Rap has been noted for its emphasis on lyrical dexterity. It has also been characterized by multi-syllabic rhymes, complex wordplay, a continuous free-flowing delivery and intricate metaphors. This video is a representation of what the song title C.R.E.A.M means which is Cash Rules Everything around me. The video represents this meaning through what we would stereotype what a gangster/rap life is about. One of these is how in the video drug dealing is making their money, this is shown by one of the guys in the group standing with a group of people who have come up to him, hands near each other, go away from him with the guy with a lot of money in his, giving off the impression that he just dealt them drugs. Another example that shows that money is the most important thing is when the whole group sitting around a table with big bags of money everywhere and champagne flowing. This could be appearing to the audience because it is showing that by being like the Wu Tang Clan or even being a drug dealer could mean that you have the high life. This also shows that drug dealing could mean the big time and is a way of a rappers/gangsters life. Another example of a gangster life apart from drugs is when there is a close up on the group in a car, driving fast away from the police with a black piece is clothing finding the guy face who is standing so he is above the car which then cuts to a mid shot of 'method man' shooting his fingers to the camera implying that guns link into how crime of drug dealer is how you get the money. This link to crime through drug dealing is also shown through the close up of 'Ghost Face' in handcuffs hang from the ceiling of a bus which then cuts to a group of people behind bars, this also links in with that put of the 'Handcuffed in a back of a bus, forty of us.'

Code of the Streets - Gang Starr

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT4jQld_FiE

Code of the Streets by Gang Starr is also about the hard ship of living a gangster life style and how you can get through that and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. A representative of this starts at the beginning of the video before the song even begins where there is dialogue of the group sitting on steps outside a town house talking about how they are being discriminated from getting a taxi to Brooklyn, where they live because there are gangs around there and they are being stereotype because they are black that because their not white and from Brooklyn they are criminals. Another Example of this is the other dialogue clips that have been added into the music video and song. These bits of dialogue are shown as close ups group shot of the group in the taxi's talking to the taxi drivers who are making excused lie 'No Gas,' ' Don't go to Brooklyn,' 'Show me the money first' and 'Its my lunch break' about driving them to where they want to go. This links in with the meaning of the song of how their is a street code that other people don't really seems to get or understand. Also like the Wu Tang's song 'C.R.E.A.M' Gang Starr's video represents the gangster life style of drug dealing and crime. The example of this in the video also co-inside with the lyrics of the song; For Example when the song goes 'It starts with the young ones doing crime for fun and if you ain't down, you'll get played out son so let's get a car, you, know, a fly whip get a dent, pull a screwdriver,' there is a couple of shots of teenager by a car going to steal it, showing the weapon that they will use which then finishes with a extreme close up of a screwdriver breaking into the car. This could relate to the audience because a part of the target audience are people who are from the East Coast- Brooklyn NYC so they can relate to the video because its probably what they know and how they grow up. This video also relates and appeals to the audience by how in the video when the street are shown there is rarely someone alone showing that through this lifestyle you are a union and the code of the street is being apart of something. A good example of this is at the end of the video where there is a long shot of the Gang Starr group walking down stairs to the sub-way altogether. This also shown that by being in a union of the code that they are apart of something but still discriminated, this is shown by the fact that they cant get a taxi but have to take the sub-way.

Blog 5 - Target Audience of Artist

I found, from studiering, Wu Tang Clan's Myspace that they had a large variety of fans with a broad range of ages, genders and ethnicity and religious backgrounds. From their friends/fans on myspace I found that there was no gender specifics because there seems to be a equal amount of female and male fans.

After viewing the myspace page I found that the Target audience is very deserve and was fairly hard to categorise

Here below shows the diversity of their fans from myspace.

On the top is a male, aged 29 and on the bottom is a female, who is considerly older, aged 38. As you can see they both have different ethic backgrounds. Despite these difference their is a pattern with 'Wu tang Clan' fans and that is that the majority of fans from America.

In an article by James Surowiecki evidence seems to percent that the Hip-Hop magazine market is growing in popularity (with 'Source Magazine' leading the way) as well as the genre itself. Because Wu Tang Clan have been featured in 'Source Magazine' on numerous occasions I feel that the important is to take this expanding target audience into the account so I was able to Identity them and target them more pacifically. I think it may also be useful to find out the brands and companies that advertise in this magazine "major advertisers now include DKNY, Calvin Klein and Perry Ellis" as 'Source' seems to focus on the same genre as my music video, I think that by finding our the demographics for brands advertised within this magazine will help me identify my target audience even further. With evidence both from the following article and the demographics of these brands I discovered that the audience is still diverse but predominately focuses on males that are interested in more street orientated music. Although it may be wrong to exclude certain racial groups completely i think i would be wiser to focus on the groups that evidence has shown to have a greater interest in the genre such as the African- amercian social group.

"... But even if the rise to prominence of The Source --the standard bearer -- and its competitors had been neglected in some circles, plenty of readers and advertisers are than ever before, and they're bristling with more ads than ever before, they're more popular than ever before, and they're bristling with more ads than ever before, indicating a belief on part of mainstream advertisers that hip-hop can no longer be seen as a niche market.... The Source has seen its paid subscriptions, its single-copy sales, and its total circulation was up 13 percent (topping 400,00) and its as pages were up 31 percent, even as the industry as a whole saw ad pages rise just 2.6percent. Vibe, meanwhile, whose ad pages went up 11 percent in 1988, saw circulation jump almost 20 percent, to 600,650, after a 16 percent rise the year before; after Rolling Stone (circulation 1.25 million), its the most-read music magazine in America."

The Source:

Age: Although hard to categorise between (18-40)
Gender: 50/50
Class: C1, C2 and D
Nationality: American
Psycho graphics: Individualists, Aspires and Main streamers

Demographics For Rolling Stones Magazine:

Wu Tang Clan have also features on one of the top music magazine 'Rolling Stone.' I thought it would be relative and useful to find out the demographics of this magazine, the example below show that there are more male readers of the magazine and that 18-49 years old are the most likely age group to purchase the magazine. This information will be useful when trying to narrow down our target audience.

I have also obtained some more specific information such a marital status, ethnicity and occupation to help filter the target audience even further. Even though Rolling Stones magazine doesnt focus on entirely the same genre that I have researched but has helped reinforce information that i had already found out about the genres targets audienece

Post 4 - Permission

Importance of Copyright:
  • If copyright laws didn't exist then some musican wouldnt be willing to share their ideas and we would have fewer new invoations this is because artists or creators would have no chance of finanical gain. This means that anyone could copy a CD and the musician would get nothing.
  • If there is no financial incentive to breate. Musican might as well just go on tour, with the same old songs.

Blog 3 - Song Choice

My group has decided to create a music video for the song 'Protect Ya Neck (Jump Off)' by the famous rap group 'Wu Tang Clan.' We decided to pick this song because of the fact we can challenge racial and genre issues. Another reason is because we thought that the challenge of racial and genre stereotypes would make our video more controversial. We knew that we wanted to do some kind of rap song because of the controversial idea but we found it hard to find one with no swearing in it. We thought of 'C.R.E.A.M,' also by 'Wu Tang Clan' and 'How to just kill a man' by 'Cypress Hill.' You didn't choose these songs because of the language and because they didnt have the right clear up beat that we wanted to make females being the front men in a rap video.

'Protect ya Neck (Jump Off)' lyrics :

[INS]
Ladies and gentlemen, we'd like to welcome to you
All the way from the slums of Shaolin
Special uninvtied guests
Came in through the back door
Ladies and gentlemen, its them!

Dance with the mantis, note the slim chances
Chant this, anthem swing like Pete Sampras
Takin it straight to Big Man on campus
Brandish your weapon or get dropped to the canvas
Scandalous, made the metro panic
Cause static, with or without the automatic
And while I'm at it, yo, you got crash, pass it
Its drastiv, gotta send half to Dirty Basatard

[Raekwon]
Waves is spinnin, blades is spinnin
Slay em in the eighth inning
Stay truck, god stay playin linen
Kill rap, observe the uptowns, ho, feel that
Mink jeans on, seen where the real at
2000 zitos, movin wit a ill ego
For real, for real, ill lines, ill people
Yo, bring it back, 9 more civilians
Pollyin deals, monopoly and bills
Y'all niggas lyin
Caught 300, lab look royal wit a mean stomach
Go broke, all seen, done it
Words from the heavt set
If I dont eat, then we already met
Fly ass bro, liver than coke

[Meth]
Now what Clan you know wit lines this ill?
Bust shots at Big Ben like we got time to kill
Niggas can't gel or I'm just too high to tell
Put on my gasoline boots and walk through hell
Wit 9 generals, 9 ninjas in your video
9 milli blow, semi auto wit no serial
Man metaphysical, I speak for criminals
Who don't pay theyu bills on time and fuck wit digital
Never seen, smoke a bag of evergreen
My sword got a jones, more heads for the severing
Johnny in the dungeon, takin all bets, throw ya ones in
Scared money dont make money, throw ya guns in.

[Masta Killa]
That's word to Jah Mo, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Blowin hydro on a beach wit Tamiko
My gun bullet hollow for you to swallow
Blowin the nozzle, hear it whistle
One in the head, this is code red, man for dead
X amount of lead spray from the barrel
Heat clear the street like Connor O'Carroll
Fully equipped, rifles, banana clip shit
To make my niggas from East New York flip

[Bobby Digital]
Yo, you may catch me in a pair of Polo Skipperys, matching
Razor blades in my gums(BOBBY!)
You may catch me in yellow Havana Joe's goose jumper
And my phaser off stun (BOBBY!)
Y'all might just catch me in the park playin chess, studyin math
Signin 7 and a sun (BOBBY!)
But you won't catch me without the ratchet, in joint
Smoked out, dead broke or off point (BOBBY!)

[Ghostface]
Wallo's comfortable, chocolate frosting
Your socks hangin out, yours is talkin
Rock so steadily, son, I'm still crazy
Sport my old Force MD furs in the 80's
Nat Turners wit burners, Jackie Joyner-Kersee
Taught y'all niggas how to rap, reimburse me
Rothsale's. ruby red sales, Bloomingdale's, blocks
Ox tails chopped up in Caribbean spots
I'm nice, maxed out, creepin wit the ax out
Murder these bikini bitches, switchin with they backs out

Then we are not doing the rest of the song plus all rude words will be beeped.

Blog 2 - Exploring Music Video

"Hurt" by Johnny Cash

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m_VBR8XZYI&feature=related

This video "Hurt" by Johnny Cash is a Country music video looking back on Johnny Cash's life, going through what he has and hasn't done. This is represented in the video by the flash backs of Johnny Cash's life, for example; his walking and looking into a old run down house when he was younger, which looks like the one he could of grown up in. This video also represents the sorrow of his life, for what he has and hasn't done, he was has gained and what he has lost. This is shown also through the flash backs and also the sorrow shines through with the fact he is sitting in a empty house by himself with a lot of objects around like food and awards, making it seem that even through he has got and achieved so much he still is hurt. The only part of the video which is the opposite, at the time to, what the song is Johnny Cash's wife June who in the video is standing above him, watching over him like he isn't alone. Now the fact that June is in the video is more representative because she died while the music video was being made. I think this is why June is edited in the part of the song where Johnny Cash sings 'Everyone I know goes away in the end.' This brings the sorrow and grief back to the video, relating to the song, by the end of the video where Johnny Cash is playing the piano, plays the last note then closes the piano, rubbing his hand over it. This represents the end of the song, June's life, his music caress life and his own as he dead shortly after this video was shot.

"Crazy in Love" by Beyonce

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6HPJJjqvG0

The Beyonce video of 'Crazy in Love' is a R'n'B video representing the sexiness and craziness of what being crazy in love/ what R'n'B today is. This video shows a good representation of how the lyrics can link into what video. For example when Beyonce sings 'I look and stare so deep into your eyes' at the beginning of the video she is looking directly into the camera, contacting with the audience and the camera making the audience straight away feel contacted to the video. This also the sexiness of the video. Another example of the sexiness in the video through what Beyonce wears; red heels with short denim shorts, showing a lot of skin. Sexiness is also shown when Beyonce does her famous 'booty shake' to the camera. Also in this section of the music video she is wearing street wear which is very reliable to the R'n'B music and the audience that enjoys her music. In the chorus of the song the music video changes from the street to all the crazily flashing lights on her as she dances crazily to the camera . Another thing which relates to the craziness to the video is the burning car which shows the extreme feeling she has and how it is like fire.
"Praise You" by Fatboy Slim.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiXg_70rMeM&ob=av2n
This video "Praise You" by Fatboy Slim is a Big Beat/House music video which was shot on a random mall in the USA by 5 different hand held cameras dotted around the dancers in the video. This makes the video more reliable because it makes the video seem as the audience is actually watching the audience making it more realistic also making it seem like it is actually just ordinary people. Because the video was shot randomly the reactions of the people looking oddly while watching the dancers in the mall are real making the video also more realist making it more reliable. The dancers are also doing a odd dance which represents the song because it gives off the impression that people should be praise for the way they are even if they are a bit odd. The fact that it is a group dance contributes with the line 'We've come a long, long way together, brings the audience in a union of what is going on in the video. Another example of this in the video is when a person in the audience turns off the music while the dancers are dancing but instead of them getting mad the main dancers jump hugs him and then turns on the music again.
"November Rain" by Guns N' Roses
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SbUC-UaAxE&ob=av2e

This video "November Rain" by Guns N' Roses is a rock music video is a good representation of a rock n' roll life style which is directly shown in the first part of the music video where the camera zooms into Gun N' Roses on stage with a full band/small orchestra. The shot also shows the crowd that are watching the band which is very big giving off the feel that the band are living this extreme high life. The stage also brings off this dark setting which gives off the impression of the dark side to the rock n' roll life style which links in well with the other half of the video which is about the lead singer marriage to a very good looking model and then her dying on their wedding day. This extreme way of life is attractive to the band's fan because it is what they desire. Another example for how extreme/expersive this music video is is when Slash, the guitar is playing his guitar solo outside a desserted church which is filmed by a hellicopter camera which is the most expensive shot you can do.

Blog 1 - Introduction

For this coursework we have to produce a media portfoilio which includes two print items and a music video which we have a present our research, planning and evalution. Developing further skills then the ones we devolped from our magazine design coursework, such as; photoshop. We will also be blogging this coursework the same way as we did in AS.
